Evening traditions aren’t my thing.

To go along with yesterday’s prompt about morning traditions, today’s is about evening traditions! They kind of aren’t my thing.

Do you end your day the same way every day? What are your nighttime traditions?

I only wish we had a fireplace.

I only wish we had a fireplace.

As much as I enjoy my morning routine, I don’t have a real nighttime routine! My evenings are much more varied than my mornings, so it’s hard to stick with doing the same thing each night. Some nights I’m home, and some nights I’m out. Some nights I get home at a decent time, and others I get home later. All of these factor into my nighttime routine – or really, the lack thereof.

On the nights I am home, however, my nights look like this: We cook dinner. We clean up the kitchen. We change into pajamas and sit on the couch, and I’ll usually knit or spin for a bit. Usually we’ll watch the previous day’s Daily Show and Nightly Show episodes. We’ve also been watching the West Wing, so sometimes we’ll watch an episode or two.

Beer and coding are also enjoyable evening activities.

At around 10 or so, I’ll get up to brush and floss my teeth, and then I’ll head to bed with my book. I usually don’t read very long, maybe 15 minutes or so. I like to hit the sack by 10:30 but sometimes I go to bed earlier. It’s rare when I’m up later than 11, sadly. I remember being in college and never going to bed before 2am! I miss those days!

One of these days I’d like to establish a nighttime routine, but who knows when that will be. I’m not naturally inclined to routines and I tend to get bored of them very easily, so I’m okay with just a morning routine. It’s a start, at least.

  1. I haven’t really had any since I was a kid. Ironically my family had two night time traditions, one was great, and the other not so. My Dad would watch the 5:30 local news, 6:00 world news, what ever show came on after that, fall asleep, then wake up for the 11:00 news. Not my favorite.

To the flip of that, my parents were really into music, like 1000’s of records worth into it. So many evenings were spent putting on a CD or record, sitting quietly while we listened to our cathedral ceiling living room fill with classical, new age, jazz and sometimes adult contemporary.

    I miss that.

    1. Listening to music with your family sounds awesome! That sounds like a great evening tradition! I’d watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with my parents in the evenings. We wouldn’t listen to music often, just as background noise when we had gatherings of people over for holidays or summer barbecues. It’s cool that your folks were so into music!
