I was so excited about my training and so excited about my runs last week.
Then, Wednesday happened.
I ran Tuesday night as I usually do. I pushed myself a little harder than usual, but nothing incredibly out of the ordinary for me. I walked home with my legs a bit sore, again, as usual. Stretched, foam rolled, went to bed.
I woke up at around 2am Wednesday morning, both ankles throbbing in pain. I felt confused. I didn’t feel any ankle pain when I went to bed – why would it crop up all of a sudden overnight?
The pain didn’t go away when I woke up Wednesday morning. In fact, it felt a little worse in my right ankle. The pain in my left ankle went away after a couple hours, but the right ankle kept on hurting. I had to take ibuprofin to ease it a bit, and I worked from home on Wednesday to ice, massage, and elevate my right leg.
I woke up yesterday morning feeling a bit better, but knew I couldn’t run that night. I didn’t want to risk injuring myself further, so I stayed home and rested.
Staying home when I wanted to run, even when hurt, was one of the hardest things I’ve done in my short running career.
Running injuries scare me. Apart from mild calf and achilles tendon issues when I started running (buying a foam roller got rid of those issues right away), I’ve never been hurt before. It scared me when I woke up in the middle of the night in pain when it hadn’t been there the previous evening. It scared me when I thought of the injury sidelining me for more than a few days – would I be able to continue with my training?
Then I came back to reality.
Resting is the best thing I can do for my body now, and I won’t let ankle pain scare me. I’ll ice, elevate, compress, and wait for my ankle to feel better before I run again. It’s not a serious injury as far as I can tell, but I know enough to stay off it while I heal.
